Program Evaluation is applying research methods to measure and understand the design, implementation, and impact of a program in relation to the social condition or population designated to receive the program’s benefits. A program evaluation may be needed in industry, government agency, non-profit organization, or any community. The cycle of program design, implementation, measurement, and reflection is continuous in that each adaptation, program improvement, or reported outcome must be gauged and reflected upon in the context of overall goals and mission. Specific skills and experience are valuable in each stage of the research or evaluation process, and each program evaluator may have an area of specialty. Training & Facilitation, almost always co-occurs with program evaluation because implementing a new program or adapting an existing one based on a continuous improvement or data-informed model, requires changes in thinking and behavior. Given that, designing first rate training and coherent facilitation is essential for the changes to happen that lead to desired objectives. Professional development of any kind should have clear goals and fit with the overall mission and strategic objectives of your program or organization. Further, training in industry, non-profit settings or the public sector, may be evaluated for effectiveness in achieving the desired changes. The five levels of training evaluation are: satisfaction, self-reported learning, application to job (self-and other-reported), business impact, and return on investment. In addition, Developmental Evaluation may be helpful in tracking the level of adoption of new practices learned in training and reporting on application in dynamic environments; and used to inform continuous improvement cycles.
Topics for Training & Facilitation include:
- Team Alignment: Values, Mission & Objectives – members of your team, department, or community organization may work through this series of activities to reflect on and connect with their own deeply held values, find common values, and together co-create overarching achievable, measurable objectives.
- Organizational Evaluation Capacity – create an organizational culture in which data collection, strategy and analysis are understood, transparent, and aligned across departments and all levels of leadership.
- Participatory Evaluation – a proven method for allowing each member of a service delivery or program implementation team to connect, understand, and invest in tracking and reflecting on goals.
- Transformative Coaching Tools for Leaders – essential administration skills are no longer enough for effective leadership, rather leaders in today’s landscape need to understand how to accurately read, collaboratively reflect and interpret, and transparently respond to changes. Learning coaching tools allow leaders to read activities in play-by-play mode, while applying overall strategy and game concept. Above all, coaches play with heart and develop exceptional, transformative relationships with teammates, trainers, and other coaches. Developing a coaching culture starts with leadership.
Consulting may overlap with evaluation since neither coaches nor consultants can claim to create results without some form of measurement. Consultants have specific skillsets and lead individuals and teams through a series of known steps, such as in a model or specific technology. A consultant may also develop areas of expertise such as project management or continuous improvement models. A consultant plays a supervisory role, acting as a guide or sometimes critical friend.
Coaches have a constellation of skills and competencies, including perception, curiosity, and transformative communication. A coach must find the most natural and powerful source of motivation for individuals and teams, by enabling them to identify and co-create shared goals. Development results when individuals contribute out of collective desire, and change occurs.
